HR Annual Report: 2025

Our People: Faculty and Staff Data | 2025 Highlights | HR Leadership

CHRO Introduction

For 125 years, Carnegie Mellon "has harnessed the power of possibilities to create a legacy of impact." I'm proud that the Office of Human Resources (OHR) is part of that legacy. Our refreshed Strategic Framework aligns more closely with the university's, focusing on institutional agility and resilience and creating a vibrant and engaged global community. Our mission is to support the university's strategic plan and foster the success of a dynamic workforce through agile practices, collaboration and a culture of continuous learning.

In support of cultivating an inclusive and supported community, I'm especially pleased with the work our benefits team did to mitigate the impact of rising health plan costs. We were able to keep employee health plan contributions stable for 2026 through a combination of careful plan changes and the university absorbing the remaining cost. Read more about the accomplishments of our Total Rewards team including the newly implemented tuition reimbursement process.

We also remain focused on developing and adapting the workforce. OHR offers a robust set of professional development programs, in addition to the wealth of self-directed and on-demand learning resources. Since inception, our development programs have 414 graduates, our custom training solutions reached over 450 employees and we launched two new courses for supervisors. Read more about the accomplishments of our Learning and Development team including their change management work in support of essential HR projects and initiatives.

Although HR is inherently a people-centered discipline, we also Leverage Technology and Data to drive decision making and streamline and support internal and external processes. For example, HR Technology leveraged a Workday application to create a tuition reimbursement process solution, helped to automate severance payments and piloted new Workday talent optimization tools. HR serves as a critical strategic and agile partner with our campus community. In 2025, our recruiting team filled 935 positions and helped place nine individuals via the Dual Career Program and 153 individuals via the Temporary Employment Services. Read more about our Organizational Effectiveness team including their ongoing support of performance management.

This is our opportunity celebrate our successes and recognize the work of our team. There is always more to come, however, and I'm looking forward to all we can achieve together.

Sincerely,
Kelli Shuman
Chief Human Resources Officer
