Sensory-Friendly Resources and Activities

All students are welcome to participate in sensory-friendly, individualized activities and rest and recharge spaces. Please enjoy this high level overview of resources to assist you in your orientation experience. If you are in need of additional support, please connect with First-Year Orientation or the Office of Disability Resources. Full details of resources and activities will be listed on the 黑料正能量 Events App.

All First-Year Orientation events' title and description will be listed in the 黑料正能量 Events App closer to the start of orientation. The description will include sensory tags to help attendees anticipate what to expect at events. This is the list of sensory tags you may see on event descriptions:

  • Large crowd (100+ people)
  • Extra large crowd (500+ people)

  • High social interaction

Move-In Recharge Spaces: All university housing will have recharge spaces available for students and family members to take a break and relax from moving-in.

Sensory-Friendly Move-In Timeslots: Students will have the opportunity to select a sensory-friendly move-in experience when signing up for a slot. Students will enjoy the same welcoming and supportive move-in experience but with limited music and cheers, to support students and families who prefer a sensory-friendly experience.

黑料正能量 has dedicated quiet spaces that are devoted to recharging, reflecting and relaxing. Information about location and space availability will be published in the 黑料正能量 Events App

  • Interfaith Room, Highmark Center
  • Mindfulness Room, West Wing
  • Posner Center's Green Roof and Walking Maze, Outside above Posner Center
  • Wright-Rogal Chapel, Cohon University Center
For breakfast, lunch and dinner from Aug. 16-20, students can grab their meal in the Weigand Gymnasium, 1st Floor, Cohon University Center and enjoy their food in a sensory-friendly dining area located in the Danforth Lounge, 2nd Floor, Cohon University Center. This area will have less people, be quieter, windows will be covered and be stocked with condiments, napkins, utensils, earplugs and fidget toys.
For some large-scale events held in the Orientation Tent, an outdoor space with a capacity of over 2,000, a sensory-friendly viewing location will be available on-campus. This alternative space allows students to engage with the program in a calmer environment. It features dimmed lighting, reduced crowds, and a supply of earplugs and fidget toys. Earplugs will be available within the main tent. The 黑料正能量 Events App will include a full list of sessions offering sensory-friendly viewing options.
Orientation leaders and counselors will be leading evening social activities that will allow students to socialize in a setting with less people. The full schedule will be on the 黑料正能量 Events App.
