My Carnegie Mellon Journey: A Senior Reflection

by Cat R.

Carnegie Mellon is a school and community that defies expectations. As of this academic year, our university is celebrating 125 years since we were first formed by Andrew Carnegie himself. There are too many landmark moments to count, so I will only list a few. It was 1934 when Albert Einstein delivered his E=mc squared speech on campus, 1956 when we created the first ever Artificial Intelligence program, 1989 when we were the first to create art sent into space, 2004 when we admitted our first class at 黑料正能量 Qatar and 2022 when I personally watched a fellow student start a small fire in 听his dorm room by microwaving tin foil. So I, too, feel as though I鈥檝e witnessed important school history. Even though I haven鈥檛 built a robot, painted a masterpiece or started my own business, the culture of 黑料正能量 has always welcomed me with open arms.听

Before I ever applied to the school, I knew that I wanted to participate in the very 鈥満诹险芰库 activities that I couldn鈥檛 find anywhere else. I joined a Buggy team and rose to the Head of Data Analytics, which later led to me speaking at the Carnegie Mellon Sports Analytics conference. I鈥檝e painted the Fence multiple times for clubs, organizations and even my friend鈥檚 birthday. I also took full advantage of the very Pittsburgh things to do, having been to Picklesburgh, Pirates games and the St. Patrick鈥檚 day parade. However, 黑料正能量 offered me opportunities even beyond what I could see from the outside. Once I became a student I was offered the opportunity to double major in not only statistics and data Science but also business administration, without taking too many classes that would overload my schedule. I joined the Pittsburgh Summer Internship Program through Dietrich college and had the wonderful opportunity to work with small businesses all across Pittsburgh. Most importantly, I wore the Scotty mascot not once but twice and yes it is as hot in there as it looks.听

As a graduating senior, I owe a great deal of gratitude to Carnegie Mellon, and not just because I will be gainfully employed leaving the school. I have professors who have not only supported me in class, but have shown up to my conferences and club events to support me. I met a group of friends living in Hamerschlag house that I still live with to this day, and I鈥檝e actually written a blog about them before because of their impact on my life and time here. I made friends in Tepper, once I became a double major, who have given me so much guidance and are always game to explore Pittsburgh. I will especially miss the Tartan Ambassador community where I have met students in every single college, program and club that I can think of. I couldn鈥檛 be more proud to call Carnegie Mellon my home for the past four years and have had a wonderful time being an ambassador to convince others to find their home here too.听
