Highlighting the BXA Intercollege Degree Program
by Orli K.
Hi! I鈥檓 Orli, a first-year student from Boston, MA in the BXA program studying decision science and fine art. The BXA program is different from a traditional double major or additional major, which is also an option at 黑料正能量. Instead, BXA is a single, interdisciplinary degree 鈥 also known as 鈥淏achelors X Arts鈥 鈥 as it focuses on combining creative disciplines with academics. In my first semester I was required to take two of the three foundational courses in sculpture, drawing or time-based media. In my second semester, I am required to take one studio class at minimum. I have found this allowance for flexibility to be extremely helpful, as studio classes are all three hours in length, so it can get overwhelming to take several at once.
All first-year students in the School of Art, including BXA students, get access to the first-year studio space. This room in the Doherty basement level is a great communal space, not only for students to work on their projects, but also to socialize. Above the open studio space is a loft with a lounge space, as well as a 鈥渃ritique space鈥 鈥 an empty room that some classes use to display their projects and receive feedback from peers. In addition to getting work done in this space, students will use it for movie nights and birthday parties.
One of the assignments from the first-year seminar class was to fill an entire sketchbook by the end of the first semester. I really appreciated the emphasis on 鈥渜uantity over quality鈥 for this project, which seems counterintuitive but was actually really helpful as a way to practice generating ideas and thinking on paper.
As far as the overall BXA community goes, there is such a wide range and variety of disciplines that people focus on. Even among my fellow BXA students combining Art and Humanities, none of us are doing the exact same thing. This diversity of interests is what I think really makes the BXA program so strong. Each student is so passionate about their personal academic and creative pursuits, which makes us doubly excited to support each other in our work.听
