Military Education and Workforce Preparation

For more than a century, ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ has partnered with the U.S. military to help meet the demands of a changing world.

From transforming campus into a training ground during World War I and educating thousands of soldiers in World War II, to advancing today’s frontiers in artificial intelligence, robotics and data science, ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ has consistently connected academic innovation with national service.

Across generations of technological change — from mechanized warfare to the cyber age — one constant remains: the need to maintain a decisive edge. Together, ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ and its military partners are building the knowledge, tools and talent required to meet that challenge.

ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿ Prepares Navy Robotics Specialists for the Age of AI

ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿â€™s Robotics Academy partners with the U.S. Navy to deliver hands-on training that prepares sailors to operate and adapt to a wide range of robotic and AI-enabled systems. Through an intensive, interdisciplinary curriculum and real-world simulations, participants build foundational skills in robotics, systems thinking and machine learning.

Steel City Naval ROTC

The Naval ROTC program — established in 1926 and now the Navy and Marine Corps’ largest commissioning source — includes the Steel City unit (founded in 1987), where students from Carnegie Mellon, the University of Pittsburgh and Duquesne University receive hands-on leadership training to become commissioned officers.

Robotics Academy, Navy Partner on Effective Training Program

ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿â€™s Robotics Academy partnered with the U.S. Navy to pilot a hands-on training program designed to build foundational engineering and robotics skills for sailors. The program emphasizes adaptable, platform-agnostic learning — preparing participants to quickly operate, maintain and troubleshoot a wide range of autonomous systems. Early results show the approach can effectively accelerate learning and help the Navy prepare its workforce for rapidly evolving technologies.

The WWII Army Specialized Training Program at Carnegie Tech

During World War II, Carnegie Institute of Technology, precursor to ºÚÁÏÕýÄÜÁ¿, transformed its campus into a training site for the U.S. Army’s Specialized Training Program, educating hundreds of soldier-students in engineering and technical fields critical to the war effort. The program combined intensive academic coursework with military and physical training to rapidly prepare specialists for a highly mechanized conflict. This large-scale partnership helped establish a lasting model for collaboration between universities and the federal government in workforce development.
